WGC of NSW open day 1 August

Make My Day

For hundreds of years humans have hunted with dogs to retrieve game. Whilst hunting has been in decline, the instinct for which gundogs were bred is kept alive through the Australian National Kennel Control sanctioned sport of Retriever Trials.

Retriever Trials simulate duck hunting. Simulated, not actual hunting, is what makes this sport attractive to lovers of working dogs. The sport has been established in Australia since 1950 and competitions are conducted in and around Sydney and Canberra during the months of March to September. It is a great time of the year for people who love the outdoors and working with their dogs.

Retrieving Trials are designed to test a gundog's ability to retrieve game on land and water. The handler directs their dog by voice, whistle and hand signals to select game as directed by the judge.

Each year State Championships and a National Championship are held to decide the country's leading competitors. It is a team sport that is designed to provide competitive minded dog lovers the opportunity to test their dog's skill against other competitors.

Like obedience and bench shows, successful dogs earn titles, which include Novice Retriever Dog, Restricted Retriever Dog, Qualified All Age Dog, Retrieving Champion and National Retrieving Champion. These prestigious awards are pedigree registered as a record of the dog's success in this highly specialised and exciting sport.

The Working Gundog Club of NSW specialises in training new participants by conducting regular training days at the Royal NSW Canine Council's Erskine Park headquarters. All registered gundogs can participate in Retriever Trials.

You Are Welcome to Attend Our Demonstration Day

The Working Gundog Club will hold a demonstration day on 1st August at 1pm at the Royal NSW Canine Council's Erskine Park complex. You will be able to see working and training demonstrations and speak with some of Australia's leading trainers and handlers and gain insight into their scientific training methods. This introductory seminar will be conducted by 4 times national winner Geoff Cole and other prominent triallers from the WGC of NSW.

If you and your best friend would like to see for yourselves how life can become full of Fun and Thrills, register your interest and we will send you an invitation to the Club's new member open day.

Congratulations Peter and all the gang who assisted with the open day today it was very interesting and enjoyable as well as being informative.
A group of us travelled down from the Maitland area and had a great time and are very keen to get our dogs started with their training. A couple of us are members already and I think a couple more joined today. Thank you to everyone there today for making us feel welcome. :D

The "MAKE MY DAY" promo day was a big success.thankyou steve for your kind words. We certainly appreciated the 'maitland Gang" and the "Nowra gang' for making the effort to attend.60 people attended the day and many new members have come on board. It was great to see so many breeds represented. We had some toey cockers,Goldens, labs, brittanys, curly's ,Weimaramers, and GSP's.Many hands make light work and it is a tribute to our club's members that so many people pitched in.A huge thankyou must go to Sherry. She manned the shop all afternoon selling bumpers ,whistles, lanyards and other retriever essentials.Sherry also helped with flyering 38 obedience and gundog breed clubs to publicize the day.Lisa -maree kindly directed traffic at the front gate of the RNSWCC and helped with the demonstrations. Jason came all the way up from canberra for the day and made a significant contribution by helping with manning throwers and assisting the demonstrations. and instructing.Joe vella, despite having just taken his father to hospital with a heart complaint, organized the primus and billy keeping everyone happy with hot coffee.Jack Lynch spent time helping the clubs aspiring triallers as well as demonstrating all age work to the gallery.Christine hicks,a big thankyou for the superb birds and the fake gun.Julie and Ashley, awesome as usual with correlating addresses and building new cells. Thanks guys. Geoff for MC ing the day and giving his powerful insight into training dogs.geoff was also responsible for the clever add's in the K9 journal

It sounds as if you had a great time and the event was well worth while. Lets hope you get some new trialers who stick with it! Are you going to offer some sort of mentoring to new people who would like help?
