I am sad to announce that Dad’s dog Grand Rt Ch Kadnook King of Kanberra DM was put down today. Dad had noticed several lumps on King in the last week or so. Veterinary advice was that these cancers were inoperable and Dad made the difficult decision to have him euthansed.
I have had the pleasure of watching many of Australia’s best dogs over the last nearly 30 years. Dogs like Jake Christensens Sam, The great Bambillay dogs Russ and Ash, Jack Lynchs Jill and in more modern times the likes of the incomparable Kato and Joe Vellas Blackie to name just a few. There is no doubt Kings name should also be mentioned with these and the other great dogs this country has seen. His record speaks for itself
King won his first six trials straight and had his retrieving title by about 2 and a half years of age. Although Dad didn’t keep great records in the early days he believes King gained approx 400 championship points. He won 16 state championships and was runner up in a further 6. Unfortunately he was never able to win the elusive National but was runner up in 2005. He gained 234 championship points in championships alone.
To the best of my knowledge King was the first dog to win all the different state championships in their career.
I think it important to mention the breeder of King, Kadnook Kennels. The decision by Wayne and Jill to import a working bred Labrador from Scotland has proved a master stroke. King is a great example of mixing these working lines with some of Australia best genetics.
I was once asked what made King such a great dog. I have given a great deal of thought to this and for me it was his flexibility. King could easily switch from working on his own to working with his handler. He was great marker with a phenomenal memory and a passion to please, you soon have the recipe for one of the great retrievers this country has seen.
Vale King You lived up to your name.....
