Kerang/Cohuna floods

Postby Teresa Parkinson » Thu 27 Jan 2011 12:14 pm

Hi,

I understand a few people were asking after us in the aftermath of the Kerang floods. We were never under threat of the Loddon River floods - our property is 18km west of Kerang township. It's the estimated 90km long x 40km wide body of water moving through Cohuna from the Pyramid Hill area that is now causing us grief as it attempts to get through Kow Swamp and the Pyramid Creek. The area directly to the west of us is being slowly engulfed by floodwater breaking through the Pyramid, Calivil and Barr Creeks.

I'm happy to report that after a week of watching slow moving floodwaters approach us, we were told yesterday that our property should be spared. At worst, they expect the floodwater to pond up to our irrigation channel and drain away in time. For those who don't know our place, the channel is approximately 10m from our back door so we were relieved to hear that all should be well.

In the meantime, the flood water continues its slow, relentless march. Many of our friends have been forced out of their homes and off their farms and don't know what they will return to. It is expected that these floodwaters will take weeks to recede. After 10 years of heartbreaking drought, the whole region is going to do it even tougher again. The one thing we're all extremely thankful for is that no lives have been lost.

In all likelihood, none of us will ever see this sort of event again in our lifetime.

Thanks to all who asked after us.
