Dog blood donations

Postby Bob Pickworth » Tue 28 Jun 2011 4:01 pm

I am currently in UK and havig a look around at some of the kennels over here and discovered that many of the breeders donate blood from their dogs to a ational "doggy blood bank" - similar to red cross in Australia. Thought others might be interested in the site http://www.petbloodbankuk.org/

I haven't heard of this in Oz - anybody know if it happens and am ignorant?

Seems I am ignorant as I missed a few letters in words - spelling errors, sorry about that. Bob

Bob, Four of my dogs were canine blood donors for a few years. Three aged out. One had pups so was not eligible any longer.

Organised through Werribee Vet Hospital. Staff visit varies clinics around Victoria. They give the biggest serves of liver treats.

Blood transfusions are quite common, around here they like calm dogs over 30kg as the donors. There is no blood bank that I am aware of, not a National one at any rate. Have heard of a few places where the staff often use their own dogs to be the blood donors.
