Planning for the up coming VGC training day is under way.

We would be interested in hearing what potential attendees would like addressed.

Given the trial season will be getting started by then one suggestions is to include a mock novice or restricted trial on the day. Has anyone got any interest in this?

Another suggested topic is " training on your own" what you can really do if you don't have easy access to a training partner.

These days are only of benefit if we can deliver what people are looking for so please speak up and help us deliver the type of training and advice you would like.

Regards,

Gareth

Great idea, hope we can make it this time. I think the dummy trial situation will be perfect, so many dogs train well but blow it at a trial because they can and "Training on your own" will be a great advantage to many.

I think that most newbies would like the mock trial, but of course it only is useful if they remember that it is training and leave the pegs, simplify, etc. What about also doing a session on teaching lining blinds, holding lines into water (as a novice judge I see a lot of dogs that do not hold the line to the bird through water and particularly deviate on entry) and how to stop your dog on the whistle. Gareth, I realise that you are asking the newer handlers what they want, I am just offering a few ideas that they may be interested in

Hi All,
Happy New Year to all.
I train alone unfortunately and i do struggle at times. I have to thank the group here as i have picked up a lot at these training days and also Dodo Kelly and her small band for there help in the last couple of months.Which by shear luck got me a a second in beginners at the Brittany spaniel trials in November which i thought was not deserved.

Yes more novice and restricted work will help and whistle work which i'm doing and struggling withat the momment.
I have a long ways to go as i need to be trained more than my dog as she is so eager to please.
See you soon
Regards
Guy

Our February Training Day on Sunday 9th February will held be at Tooberac - gates open at 8.30am commencing 9.00am. Many thanks go to Karl Britton for securing this new property. It has been extremely difficult to locate a site suitable at this time of the year and we are grateful for the property owners for allowing the VGC to use their property when fire risk is extremely high so absolutely no smoking!

As usual we will have experienced All Age handlers and Judges together with our animal behaviourist Sally. They will be able to assist people and dogs from Beginners through to Restricted and All Age as required. Please register your intention to attend with: Karl Britton at: karl.britton@yahoo.co.uk who will also be able to assist with any queries you may have.

Directions:
From the Hume Highway (Coming from Melbourne) take the 1st exit for Seymour, C384 exit towards Seymour/Tooberac
Turn left onto Seymour/Tooberac Road, C384
Stay on C384 for 14 km's, go past Pucka Mil base on your right hand side, turn left onto Duells Road, (Sign Posted from Turnoff)
Travel approximately a further 4 kms, go straight through cross roads, turn right into first property on your right side.

Follow signs to Car Park

You can go a back way for those that are living west of Melbourne, if you have a recent GPS it will take you straight in.

Back way coming from Melbourne;

Take the Northern Highway head towards Bendigo
Turn Right after Tooberac for Seymour
Remain on C384 heading towards Seymour
Travel approximately 10 kms, take the Duells Road Turn off on your right hand side.

I will assist where required.

A few years ago we had a training session at John McCorys property, the training was a round robin series where six all age handlers had a seperate task to train the newer handlers.
After about fifty minutes the novice handlers moved to the next trainer.
It worked very well with the handlers getting full instructions on all facits of training.
The training kept going and did not get bogged down, the handlers did not loose interest.

1/ Peg work, gun handling, thrower instruction.
2/ dog marking on a land retrieve
3/ water entry, water encouragement, retrieve across water.
4/ introduction to different species of game.
5/ Retrieving rules and introduction to the score sheet.
6/ Problem solving

This is only a suggestion

Good Morning,

Thank you for your reply and your attendance at the VGC Training Day this Sun 09 Feb 14.

Due to the hot weather we intend to have an early start at 0700hrs, train for around 3 to 4 hours, this will enable most of the instruction to be carried out in the cooler part of the morning.

The initial plan is to split the group into various groups of mixed ability with an instructor including helpers (Dummie Throwers) and move to a different location of the property which will immediately. We have a full range of very experienced handlers, seasoned judges and behavioural specialists who can assist you on the day , both individually and as a group. You are free to move between groups to get the most out of the instruction and what you want to do. We will work on individual dog problems and offer you a number of training drills to add to your skill set for training your dog.

Do not worry if you can't make 0700hrs please arrive when you can and join in on one of the classes. Once the collective lesson has taken place there will be time to work on individual dogs and any issues or concerns you may have in your Gun dog training repertoire.

We have plenty of water on the property so you will have chance to cool off your dog, if they become a little hot. Please come prepared for a warm day and once you have finished the training prior to your departure check your dog for grass seeds or burrs once we have finished. Most of the grass seeds have dropped and I have been personally training in the area for the last two months and had no problems, Goldie's may get a few burrs, but with a good brushout your dog should be fine. There is no live stock on the property and all the paddocks may be left open.

There is a small surcharge for the day if you are not a member of the VGC. This cost is $10 dollars payable at the site, please come with the correct change.

The property is extremely dry please be very careful when moving around in between classes, no smoking, no naked flames for cooking etc, it is a strictly a NO FIRE zone.

Directions to the property are below this will be signposted from the turn off at Tooberac road.

Karl
