2018 National Retrieving Trial Championship
Alexandra-Victoria
14, 15 & 16 September 2018

Judges: Kate & Noel Eltringham

The 2018 National Retrieving Trial Championship was held over three days on two properties close to Alexandra, Victoria. Day 1 was held on sloping hill country off Gordons Lane on a property owned by Val and Andrew Armstrong and days two and three were held on a property off Whanregarwen Road owned by Bev and John Reece. The trialling fraternity is indebted to the owners of the land for making their properties available for the conduct of the trial. Up to 200 spectators were in attendance to view some of the trial.

From a total of 51 entries, 49 dogs made it to the start line to commence the trial.

Run 1 (Day 1) – Judge Kate Eltringham

Run one was a double mark and a blind with the blind at 125 metres diagonally up a hill to be retrieved first. The second bird retrieved was a mark across the hill at 110 metres and the third bird retrieved was the second mark at 90 metres slightly down the hill.
A total of eleven dogs failed to complete run one. The top three scoring dogs on this run were Russell Whitechurch’s RT Ch Adderslot Tuscanys Arrow, Jim Hargreaves’ Ellishea Rips Chevrolet RRD and John Stott’s Gr RT Ch Kadnook Dreams Edge .

Run 2 (Day 1) – Judge Noel Eltringham

Run two was a triple mark retrieve with the right hand mark being slightly up hill and at 105 metres the second mark diagonally down hill at 130 metre and third a short mark across the hill at 75 metres to be retrieved last. Dogs had to go in and or through gullies to get each of the birds.
A total of five dogs failed to complete run two. The three top scoring dogs this run were Russell Whitechurch’s 14, 15, 16 & 17 Ntl RT Ch & Gr RT Ch Adderslot Chief CM DM, Richard Eaton-Wells’ RT Ch Willowyse Sir Peregrine and Helena Cornelius’ RT Ch Adderslot Maximus Sam.
After day one a total of 33 dogs were carried into day two of the 2018 National Championship.

Run 3 (Day 2) – Judge Kate Eltringham

Run three was a double mark and a blind retrieve. The dog was left in a hide and the handler proceeded to the firing point to fire at the blind. After firing at the blind at 105 metres the handler reloaded called their dog and fired at a mark at 90 metres which landed out of sight across a pool of water and then the second mark was cast across the line of the blind retrieve to land 75 metres from the dog and to the left of the line to the blind.
A total of three dogs failed to complete run three. The top three scoring dogs on this run were Richard Eaton-Wells’ RT Ch Gidgee Girl (Imp UK), Richard Eaton-Wells’ RT Ch Gidgee Down Under Dell (Imp UK) and Jim Hargreaves’ Ellishea Rips Chevrolet RRD.

Run 4 (Day 2) – Judge Noel Eltringham

Run four consisted of another triple mark. This run contained a lot of reeds around a partially dry wetland area with the handlers having small windows of opportunity to help their dogs should they get into trouble. The handlers proceed from the control; point to a first set of pegs where they fired at a long middle bird at 125 metres, they turned 20 degrees to the right to fire at a bird at 90 metres after which they had to reload. They then started to move towards a front set of pegs four metres away, at which time a short walk up was thrown into splashing water at 75 metres and to the left of the long mark bird. Retrieve order was either of the first two birds with the walk up bird to be retrieved last.
A total of ten dogs failed to complete run four. The top three scoring dogs on this run were Mark Stockdale’s Tirnanoge Lexi Rooney, Rick Johnston’s RT Ch Inkaline Phoebe and Russell Whitechurch’s RT Ch Adderslot Maggie May DM.

Run 5 (Day 2) – Judge Kate Eltringham

Run five consisted of a mark and two bird retrieve. The first bird was cast left to right to land on the top of a small rise at 115 metres> to get to this bird dogs had to face heavy reed cover before going to the fall of the bird which was in short grass. The left hand bird landed in lighter reed cover at 95 metres and 40 degrees to the left of the first bird cast. The dog was then sent for the long first bird. On picking this bird up and before entering the heavy cover on the return to the handler a two bird was cast back towards the dog to land in open ground close to the line. The dog then had to retrieve the second bird cast and then the two bird.
A total of seven dogs failed to complete run five. The top three scoring dogs on this run were Mark Stockdale’s Lowther Swift, Richard Eaton-Wells’ RT Ch Willowyse Sir Peregrine and Jim Hargreaves’ Ellishea Rips Chevrolet RRD.

Run 6 (Day 2) – Judge Noel Eltringham

Run 6 was a double blind and a mark with a diversionary cast bird. The dog was left in a hide up the top of a bank while the handler went to shoot the two blinds which were across water down a depression at distances of 100 metres and 140 metres. The dog was then called prior to the handler firing at a mark falling in water at 45 degrees to the right of the blinds and at a distance of 80 metres. The diversionary bird was then cast to land to the left of the line to the blinds. A large tree obstructed the view of the land between the blinds and the mark bird to be retrieved. The blinds were to be retrieved in any order.
A total of two dogs failed to complete run six. The top three scoring dogs on this run were Russell Whitechurch’s RT Ch Adderslot Maggie May DM, Russell Whitechurch’s RT Ch Adderslot Tuscanys Arrow and Kevin Andrews’ RT CH Adderslot Ruby.
After day two a total of 11 dogs were left to come to the starting line to commence day three.

Run 7 (Day 3) – Judges Kate and Noel Eltringham (co-judged)

Run seven consisted of a double fall and a blind retrieve. The dog was left in a hide while a shot was fired at the blind at 110 metres up the top of a bank next to a lagoon. The handler then reloaded and called the dog before firing at a mark retrieve at 110 metres diagonally across a lagoon. When the dog had passed a line across the lagoon on the way to the mark retrieve a double fall bird was then cast to land between the mark retrieve and the blind retrieve. Dogs that squared the line up to swim straight across the lagoon had difficulty seeing the cast of the double fall bird. The dogs then had to retrieve the blind and then the double fall bird.
All dogs completed run 7. The three top scoring dogs on run five were Russell Whitechurch’s RT Ch Adderslot Maggie May DM, Jim Hargreaves’ Ellishea Rips Chevrolet RRD and Kevin Andrews’ RT CH Adderslot Ruby.

Run 8 (Day 3) – Judges Kate and Noel Eltringham (co-judged)

Run eight consisted of a mark and double blind retrieve. All legs of the run were across water with the mark at 80 metres straight across a lagoon. Dogs were first left in a hide whilst the handler went to fire at the blinds. After the shot at the second blind a diversionary mark was cast to land at the top of a bank and well to the left of the first blind retrieve which was at 110 metres diagonally across the lagoon. The second blind was to the right of the mark retrieve just over a slight rise on the opposite side of the lagoon. After calling the dog the handler then fired at the mark retrieve prior to sending their dog for the left blind retrieve. The second blind was then retrieved followed by the mark retrieve.
Unfortunately one dog failed to complete this run. The three top scoring dogs on run eight were Russell Whitechurch’s RT Ch Adderslot Tuscanys Arrow, Richard Eaton-Wells’ RT Ch Gidgee Girl (Imp UK) and Dean Furnell’s Huntogun Tassie Devil RN NRA.

This left a total of ten dogs to have completed the 2018 National Retrieving Trial Championship.
