Optigen test for PRA

Postby Maureen Cooper » Thu 06 Oct 2005 6:20 pm

For the information of all Labrador breeders the gene for PRA has now been isolated.

Previously we had been able to test for clear, carrier or affected status by submitting blood samples for analysis and results were given based on a 'marker' test. This test was quite accurate in most cases but the PRA gene itself had not been found. This gene has now been discovered and the status of your breeding stock can now be proven. Even if your dog comes up as a carrier, you are now able to mate to a clear dog with the knowledge none of the progeny will go blind and should you wish to breed on with the progeny, the litter can be tested or any of the dogs from the litter if wanted for a breeding program should you not want the expense of checking the whole litter.

There is an Australia wide 20:20 clinic taking place in mid October and there are contacts in every State. If you require any further info. pls phone me or check the site on http://www.optigen.com
