Robert, et. al.

I have a slight problem with my young fellow, ZAK, in that he is so keen to have the pigeon he will jump up to take it 'back' from my hand after delivery. It doesn't happen if I immediately 'hide' the bird up my jumper, or similar.

I note, Robert, that you have a double-pouch-like contraption belted around your waist into which you place retrieved birds. This looks rather better to me than the bag-slung-over-the-shoulder type of affair. Is it commercially available or is it a handmade job?

Julian

Not passed away [as some have suggested], merely moved on into the Queensland countryside around Nanango- and to return to trailling in 2006 with a vengeance!

Julian

John Lawton at Specialised Dog Accessories in Melton Victoria sells these pouches. They are heavy duty leather and well made. I believe they cost around $70. Let me know if you need his number.

Cheers, Jason.

Game Pouches

Postby Robert Tawton » Fri 27 Jan 2006 8:26 am

Hi Julian,

The game pouch I have used for many years is a home made in leather. My raining pouch is also a home made job made from a remnant of a canvas sun blind. I also have a leather pouch from John Lawton, which was a trophy at the 2002 ACT State Championship and is excellent. I understand that John also has a line of pouches made from black mesh like material which have gained favour with some Victorian handlers. Yet another option are the shotgun shell pouches available from your local Gun Shop for about $25 - Gareth has used one for many years.

Kindest regards, RWT

Rob

Sorry, didn't notice your response until yesterday eveining and then I buggered up my account by changing a few details on my profile. Would it be possible for a few ballpark dimension of the pouches you use.

Julian

Game Pouches

Postby Robert Tawton » Fri 10 Feb 2006 9:15 am

Hi Julian,

The pouch I use most of the time is the one I made, included is a 50mm wide belt made from heavy duty nylon webbing, which is much thicker and stiffer than say seat belt material, with a matching “plug in” type plastic buckle . The webbing and the buckle were purchased from a local “Camping Goods” store.

From the top of the belt (sleeve) to the bottom of the pouch is 320mm, it is 200mm wide and the sides are 120mm. From the top of the front to the bottom of the pouch is 230mm.

The belt sleeve, back, bottom and front (including a 20mm hem) is one single piece of leather. The each of the two sides measure 230mm (plus 20mm for a hem) by 120mm.

As an after thought I include three leather loops (similar to a shotgun shell belt) sewn to the back of the pouch immediately below the belt sleeve. In hind sight I, would include the “shell loops” into the belt sleeve and I would make the pouch from separate pieces of leather as follows, the back including the belt sleeve with “shell loops” sewn in place before creating the sleeve, a front (with a 20mm allowance for a hem, two sides (also including an allowance for a 20mm hem) and a bottom. My punch was hand sewn using waxed thread with two needles to produce stitching that looks like it was done by machine.

I hope the above makes sense and the best of luck with your project. :D

Julian,

Instead of screwing around with making one. Why not spend 20 bucks at the local gun shop and buy a shotgun shell pouch. Works great doubles for shooting and can also hold my bumperboy controller. My one has lasted probably 15 years and is still going strong. Infact it might get a bit of working come duck opening
