2013 Dogs SA State Championship

Postby Kate Eltringham » Tue 03 Sep 2013 10:57 am

The 2013 Dogs SA State Championship was held at property at Woodchester. The property had different types of cover and terrain which allowed for a variety of runs to be set to test the dogs. The weather was warm on both days with temperatures in the mid twenties, winds were quite strong which affected the ability to vary the cast of the marks. The week previous had seen floods in the area which limited the ability to have stewards on the other side of the creek which was still flowing quite strongly in parts.

A number of trialers attended to assist with stewarding over the weekend. A big thank you to John Nairn and Phillipa Both, who stewarded both days also to Margaret Bourne, Jadine MacKenzie, Ben Kradolfer, Kerry Webster, Michael Mason, Peter Reimann, Graeme Allen and Gail Phoenix who stewarded over the duration of the trial. Lynette Schmidt and Sandy Smith were my gun stewards for the weekend – thank you. Thank you also to my trial manager Noel Eltringham who ensured everything ran smoothly through out the two days.

There were 12 competitors entered, 1 scratching so the trial commenced with 11 dogs. Four runs were completed on Day 1 with two runs being completed on Day 2.

Run 1 – Triple mark incorporating a walk up and small relocation on land. The walk up bird was landing in a depression with grass in the middle of the other two marks which were landing in stubble in the paddocks to the left and right of the walk up. Order of pick up was the left mark, right mark and then the walk up. One dog failed to complete the run with the top scoring dog being John Lawton and Ben (Rt Ch Kadnook Sporting Spirit).

Run 2 – Two bird cast from when the dogs returned from a blind across the creek and a second blind across the hill..Order of pick up was the blind in the water, blind across the hill and then the two bird. Seven dogs failed to complete the run with the top scoring dog being John Lawton and Ben (Rt Ch Kadnook Sporting Spirit) and also Richard Carr and Tye (Rt Ch Bambillay Shifting Sands)

Run 3 – A double mark and blind. The first mark was cast high on a hill to the left, the second mark cast into tussocks on the right with a blind to placed in the tussocks slightly to the right of a small gully. The blind was at a greater distance than the two marks. Order of pick up was the left mark, right mark and then the blind. All dogs completed this run with the top scoring dog being John Lawton and Ben (Rt Ch Kadnook Sporting Spirit)

Run 4 – Double mark and a blind. The handlers were on the edge of the creek, there was a long blind down the creek and slightly up the hill, a shorter mark was cast on the left up the side of the hill, four seconds later a shorter mark was cast across the creek. Order of pick up was the blind, mark up the hill then the mark across the creek. All dogs completed this run with John Lawton and Ben (Rt Ch Kadnook Sporting Spirit) once again being the highest scoring dog.

At the completion of the first four runs the leading dog was John and Vicki Lawton’s Ben (Rt Ch Kadnook Sporting Spirit). 3 dogs were to start day 2.

Run 5 – Double fall and a blind. The mark was cast over the creek with the double fall being cast towards the dogs when they were in the water or on land falling between the creek and a blind up on the hill on the edge of a crop. The order of pickup was the mark, blind and then the double fall. All dogs completed this run with the highest scoring dog being Mark Davis and Scout (Ntl & Gr Rt Ch Beereegan Last Boy Scout).
