Retrieving Newb- Good books/dvds

Postby Hannah Slocomb » Sat 10 Apr 2010 3:41 pm

Hi all

I am the owner of an almost 5 month old Chesapeake Bay Retriever and want to at least attempt doing retrieving with him. He is from dual purpose lines and both parents are US imports. His sire has a US retrieveing title and his dam has a working test title, so I at least know he has the potential to work.

I admit I barely know anything abot retrieving other then that it is very hard, time consuming and frustrating. I got to one of the lessons put on by the retrieving club of WA but I work Sunday mornings so I can't really get down there. Anyway can anybody recommend a book or dvd that will help guide me in the right direction? I have been taking it easy with his training so far and focusing on socialising him and showing him, so he is basically a blank canvas.

Try Rush Creek Press in the US.A few there to choose from depending on how far you wish to go.Evan Graham is very reliable and ships to Australia with some being free post and others $5.Hope it helps.

Hi Hannah,
Sorry there has been a bit of a delay getting back to you ,things have been a bit hectic.
It's a shame that you work Sundays as most of the trials in WA are on Sundays. If you check the WA trial dates calender elsewhere on this forum ,it will give you an idea of when trials are. Without doubt the best thing you could do is to get out to a Novice trial, see what is involved and meet up with some other novice handlers.
The Retrieving Club has proposed training days on 9/5.20/6 and 1/8 (all Sundays I know but maybe you could arrange to get to one?)
If you can get to a trial look me up , I have quite a few books you may borrow. If you want to buy one I think "Water Dog" by Richard Wolters is an excellent basic training guide and is available via Amazon or http://www.gundogsonline.com
As for DVD's I have found Mike Stewart of Wildrose Kennels in the US produces very good basic training DVDs and has a very reliable service to Oz try his website http://www.uklabs.com

Hope this helps and we will see you out at a trial soon

Cheers
Allan
