Teaching a new novice dog to go "back"

I have a 2 year old Wirehair bitch that I have started doing trials with since June this year.
How do I teach her to go "back"???
At the moment she is not getting her distance quite right. I know with more training it will get better.
Over the weekend we had a trial where the judge used decoys that the dogs had to go past. Most of the dogs with the exception of about two or three went straight like they were going to the bird then veered off to the decoys. If my girl had known how to do a "back" I "might" have been able to get her to go to the bird. Needless to say we didn't get the bird.!!!!
Any advice offered would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Edwena
