ACTGS Spaniel and Retriever Field Trial held August 2011

Postby Robert Tawton » Mon 15 Aug 2011 8:02 am

Hi All,

The ACTGS Open Spaniel and Retriever Field Trial held on 6 August in the Murrumbateman area attracted a field of 8 dogs. The event commenced in fine almost perfect conditions under the watchful eye of the judge, Mr Don Nichol from Queensland, nevertheless, as the day progressed frequent and at times heavy showers set in.

During the 1st Round all dogs were given two opportunities to demonstrate their prowess. Unfortunately during the 2nd Round the Judge called a halt to the proceedings because, despite plenty of rabbit sign, too few rabbits were being produced to give rise to a satisfactory result. A disappointing outcome, given the effort put in by Bruno and Colleen Pollini, Don Nichol and Graeme Parkinson, the Steward/Trial Manager for the day, but one graciously accepted by the competitors. Back at Bruno's Shed and at the conclusion of the luncheon break, Don provided each of the competitors with a critique on their dog's performance and this was much appreciated.

Other positives that did come from the Trial are the two aspiring Judges, Messrs R Stott and R Tawton each passed their practical examination - well done!

It is now understood that the Land Care Group released calici virus in the area a few days before the Trial and that coupled with the rain are possibly the main reasons for the lack of game.
