Saturday's trial was held in a paddock with high stubble and thick hogweed. The birds could hear the inexperienced dogs coming from a mile away and the dogs had trouble nailing down the scent, this resulted in a lot of birds being bumped early in the day and birds that were pointed flushed a long way off the dogs. Later in the day the dogs settled down better and a higher standard of work was seen, however it was still difficult conditions for backing and retrieving. The two most experienced dogs in the field completed their cards and were awarded first and second.

Sunday was run in a grass paddock for most of the day and the dog work was considerably better with way less birds being bumped of flushing too soon. Very long grass made visibility and backing difficult. Of the 7 dogs entered only 3 were taken through to the second round and unfortunately all three managed to eliminate themselves in one way or another.

It was a very good weekend regardless, lots of birds produced and I am sure that all of the dogs improved with the experience. Thank you to Prue Winkfield for providing the paddock, David Blacker & Rick Johnston for stewarding and the property owners who are a delight to work with and have the most beautiful property.
