Here is an idea. How about starting some constructive conversations describing effective training techniques that will get a dog to a competitive all-age/championship standard within the current ANKC rules?

Good idea Jason. I am sure that those who are fiercely opposed to people going down the path of 'American' training techniques will want to jump in here and start the dialogue by discussing their own training techniques for advanced levels of competition.

I feel very few people would argue that fear is not a powerful motivator of animal behaviour whenever it is experienced in either wild or domesticated animals

Whenever we discuss training techniques involving fear as the motivator it is bound to be controversial.

Trevor, when you refer to "American" training techniques, maybe "American Field Trial" techniques would be a more appropriate description.

I sense American kennels such as Wild Rose and Duckhill would not appreciate their training techniques being bracketed with those typically used by many professional field trial kennels in that country.

Check out the websites: http://www.uklabs.com/‎ and also http://www.duckhillkennels.com/

Anyone wanting to train a dog to the top level in Australia, need only adopt some of Millners methods. (duckhill kennels) no electric collars, Shock, horror!! pardon the pun.
And always remember the K.I.S.S principle. Keep It Simple Stupid.

Tony,
The KISS method is quite straightforward and understandable for most people.
It promotes success as the most influential factor.
Put SIMPLY , if a dog is struggling with a concept then simplify.... make it easier, break it down into components. There is no point in trying to , for instance , stop a dog at fifty meters if you can't manage to do it at twenty ! Get it right close in THEN extend gradually, building on success.
The principle is that success breeds confidence and confidence breeds ability.
Mark seems to have had a bit of success with this method over the last few years...................maybe it works !
