Yes, these are Utility Field Trials and in case anyone wants to ring me for the Central Highlands - my phone no is 53687264 (not 46) Perhaps Bob Crane who is on our RAFT could give us the Pointer & Setter Trial details? Perhaps Rod Watt or Andrew Yeomans can do the same for Spaniel & Retrievers?

Dates are:

Gorden Setter Club Novice and Open - 3/4 May
Victorian Gundog Club Novice/Open - 17/18 May
Irish Setter Club Novice/open - 7/9 June
VCA Campionship - 14 June

Please note that the Judge for the CHWGC UD Trial in May is Steve Burke, not David Blacker as previously posted...

Hi Folks

I see that most of the Victorian Utility Trials have 2007 dates.

In Queensland we are sometimes a bit behind, but not usually 12 months!

All our field trials went ahead this year with plenty of birds and good entries. Thanks go to Russell Thomas who provided all the paddocks and to Vicki who organised everything for the trials. It was hard work for most of the competitors to get their dogs trial fit as there were very few birds around the State apart from Gippsland and the dogs had had virtually no work since 2006.

I've been to a couple of Utility Field Trials over the years and thoroughly enjoyed watching the dogs work. Can someone explain how the point score system works. Are there sections on a score sheet similar to a retrieving trial where a dog can get a maximum, say, of 30 points for backing (for example)?

Leanne - Am sure someone who is a judge can be more specific but believe there are a total number of 240 points available and the judges can award up to so many for individual aspects such as ground cover, retrieving, bird sense, backing, etc. There are two rounds in the field and one water retrieve similar to our novice except for Championships when a blind is included. Grounds for elimination include failure to retrieve, full break, stealing , refusing to back, failure to produce birds and failure to swim. The judge can decide not to take someone into the next round for 'lack of working ability' which seems to be a catch all for the above but am not sure.
